Ernest “Ernie” Hume – WHS 1944 – Jan 15, 2017
Ernest “Ernie” Hume, 91, of Winslow, passed away, Sunday, Jan 15, 2017.
He was born in Pike County Dec 23, 1925, to Thomas Coleman Hume and Christena Wood Hume, graduated from Winslow High School in 1944 and entered military service in June. Ernie was a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 36th Army Armored Infantry Regiment. He was injured during the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged as a Staff Sargent in 1946 and married Marilee Russ on April 6, 1946.
Ernest was a Rural Mail Carrier from 1948 to 1981, while at the same time, he was an entrepreneur in partnership with family members in several small businesses, especially a 30-year relationship with his nephew, Dewayne Hume, including a partnership in Hume Television Sales and Service, and 11 years with Hume Reality and Insurance Agency.
He served the citizens of Pike County as the Civil Defense/Emergency Management Director, retiring to part time in 2012, also as E911 Director, for a combined total of 30 years, and served as Chairman 0f Pike County LEPC since its inception.
He was a prolific reader and loved to raise vegetable gardens. He enjoyed the company of his family his entire life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Marilee Russ, of Winslow; a devoted daughter-in-law, Linda Richards, of Williamsport, Mass; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his only child, Rex D. Hume on April 26, 2015; his parents; siblings, Alma Patience Hume, Velma (Hume) Thompson, Austin Hume, Oscar Hume, Virgia (Hume) Wade, Pardine Lucinda Hume, Mildred (Hume) Selby, Dolly (Hume) McCandeless and Thomas B. Hume.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p,m, EST on Wednesday, Jan 18, 2917, at the Curtis Funeral Home in Winslow. Funeral services will be at 10:30 EST on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, at the Winslow General Baptist Church, 600 E. Union Street, Winslow. with Rev. Terry Beadles officiating.
Burial will follow at Williams Cemetery near Patoka Grove Church. Pike County VFW 3587, Petersburg , will conduct military rites.
For health reasons, only artificial flowers can be received.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pike County Community Foundation, Winslow Community Center Fund, Winslow General Baptist Church or church of your choice.
