Jerry Ray Smith, 76, Evansville, formerly of Winslow, Ind. passed away on Monday May 9, 2016.
Jerry was born in Glezen, Ind. to the late Helen (Malotte) and John T. Smith. He was a graduate of Winslow High School and a veteran of the United States Army having served in Korea. He married his high school sweetheart Mary Jane Dedman in May 1959. After his time in the service concluded, they resided in Winslow then moved to Evansville in May of 2005.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and worked as a miner for 33 years at Ditney Hill, Kings Station, Wright and Old Ben Coal No. 2. He was a member of the Winslow Masonic Lodge No. 260.
Jerry was an avid bird hunter and enjoyed following the activities of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane Smith; two sons, Steve (Julie) Smith of St. Wendel and Mike (Staci) Smith of Newburgh; four grandchildren, Josh Smith, Amber (Jeremy) Borgman, Shaye Smith and Alyssa Smith; one great grandson, James Borgman; and a great grandchild on the way. He is also survived by two sisters, Betty (Jack) Benjamin of Evansville and Marilou (Ed) Mills of Plano, Texas; two brothers-in-law, John David (Susan) Dedman, Joe (Libbie) Dedman; and sister-in-law, Sue Swain; nine nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tom Smith and one nephew, David Dedman.
The family wishes to thank the years of effort by Dr. Maqbool Ahmed and his staff in helping Jerry endure his battle with Lymphoma. They would also like to thank the wonderful staff members at Deaconess Gateway, Hamilton Pointe and Charlier VNA Hospice who worked tirelessly to make him comfortable during his last days.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711 with Pastor Michael Erwin officiating. Military rites will be performed by the Retired Veterans Memorial Club.
Friends may visit from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Browning Funeral Home and again from 10:00 AM until service time on Friday.
