Lawrence D. McCandless – Member Class of 1960 – December 23, 2015
Lawrence D. “Buster” McCandless, 73, of Winslow, IN, went to be with his Lord December 23, 2015, at his residence after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Oakland City, IN on Nov 12, 1942, to Lawrence “Pud” and Kathleen (Amos) McCandless. He grew up in the Winslow area and attended the Winslow school system, He was a member of the Winslow High School Class of 1960.
He served his country from 1964 to 1966 with the Airborne First Cav. Unit 229th as a door gunner on a UH1 Huey helicopter in An Ke, Viet Nam. He worked in security for Pinkerton Detective Agency and Clark Security for many years. In later years he was employed by the Pike County School Corporation. September 21, 2002, he married Trea Curtis in Winslow.
At the time of his death, he was President of Winslow Lions Club; District 25E Leo Chairman and State Leo Chairman. He was a member of the Glezen General Baptist Church and and served as Church Trustee. He was a member of the Petersburg Moose; Petersburg VFW: Winslow American Legion; Eagles Lodge of Winslow; and Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded by his parents; a daughter, Alica Jean; and a son, Christopher D., both from a previous marriage.
Surviving are his wife, Trea; a daughter, Chasity (Paul) Brewster; three grandchildren, Seth (Keratin Phillips of Oakland City, Clay Phillips and Quentin Brewster, both of Petersburg; and two great grandchildren, Veyda and Jackson of Oakland City; one brother, Larry W. (Brenda) McCandless of Evansville; four sisters, Judy (Hubert) Loveless of Oakland City, Faye (Ernie) Johns and Lanora “Susie” (Benny) Kelley all of Winslow.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Glezen General Baptist from 1 to 8 PM with a Lions service at 7 PM and from 9 AM until service on Thursday, December 31, 2015. Service will be officiated by Rev. Eddie Willis at 2 PM with Burial at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
