Walter E. “Gene” Earley
Walter E. “Gene” Earley, 83, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital surrounded by his family.
Walter was born in Harrisburg, Illinois on March 26, 1932 to Ralph and Rosina Earley. He moved to Princeton, Indiana in 1939 where he later graduated from Princeton High School. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation where he served from 1950 to 1954 on the USS Hammerhead. Walter got his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Oakland City University in 1962 and his Master’s Degree from Brown University in 1968. In 1969, he got his real estate broker’s license at the University of Evansville. Walter worked as a math teacher at Winslow High School, and Harrison High School in Evansville from 1966 until 1992.
Walter was an avid gardener and was known for his great tomatoes, which he would give out to all of his friends. In his younger years he loved to hunt and would spend many weekends hunting with his friends. He loved football, baseball, and basketball. Walter was a kind and loving man who held family as the most important thing in his life. He married the love of his life, Mary, and they recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.
Walter is survived by his wife, Mary (Pauley) Earley; daughter, Lisa Hobgood (Tim); son, Michael Earley (Tracey); granchildren, Michael E. Earley, Cory Kissel, Hunter O’Keefe, and Cane O’Keefe; sister, Dee Kleiman (Jim); brother-in-law, John Pauley (Alma) of Bowie, Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Walter is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Eileen Burns, Juanita Feldman, and Ramona Saladin.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Friday, September 4, 2015 at Browning Funeral Home, 738 Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN, with Pastor Art Christmas officiating. Entombment will follow at Alexander Memorial Park where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct Military Rites.
Friends may visit from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Thursday, September 3, 2015 at Browning Funeral Home, and again from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday.
