Wilford Earl “Jack” Copeland, 87, of Cambridge City passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Reid Hospital and Healthcare Services in Richmond.
He was born on July 1, 1927 in Winslow, IN, Pike County to William and Mabel Corn Copeland. He was a graduate of Winslow High School, Class of 1945.
Jack received his BS degree from Oakland City University in 1949 and Master’s degree from Ball State University in 1959. He was a WWll U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Phillipine Islands. He worked at Western Wayne Schools for 40 years as a teacher, coach, administrator and retired in 1988 as Superintendent. He was a Registered School Business Administrator with the American School Business Officials. He received the Oakland City University Special Achievment award and Western Wayne School Dedicated Service award. He also co-authored a business management manual.
Jack was a 50 year member and Past Master of Cambridge Masonic Lodge #5, charter member of Cambridge City Kiwanis where he was the Citizen of the Year in 1988, Dublin American Legion Post #338, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Retired Public School Superintendents of Indiana, and a long time member of Pershing United Methodist Church and current member of Cambridge City First United Methodist Church. He was a past member of the Pershing town council and Cambridge City Library Board. In 1989, he and his wife were Grand Marshals of Cambridge City Canal Days.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, the former Lewanna R. “Lee” Hubble whom he married on July 4, 1949 in Evansville, IN; four daughters Debra L. (Dick) Hamm, Nancy L. (George) Todd, Janet L. (David) Sweet and Susan L. (Jim) Peckinpaugh; 6 granddaughters Angela Dixon, Trisha Todd, Sarah Potter, Kristi Henderson, Danielle Peckinpaugh and Nicole Gravelle; 4 grandsons Dane Summan, Jonathan Sweet, Christopher Sweet and Kyle Peckinpaugh; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters Margaret E. McAllen and Doris J. Baysinger; and 2 grandchildren Alison Sweet and Robert (Robby) Henderson.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City with Rev. Jeff Shafer officiating. Burial will follow in Zion’s Lutheran Cemetery in Pershing. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM where there will be Masonic services at7:45 PM by Cambridge Lodge #5 F&AM.
